RPN Calculator (iPod Touch & iPhone)

December 30th, 2007

HP 32SII RPN SCIENTIFICI hope You enjoyed Christmas eve as I did. I somehow managed to get around all the hassle and lay hands on a iTouch :) – What a gadget!

As I’m a big fan of RPN, You can imagine that I was not exactly happy with the integrated calculator. So I started to code a webapp-replica of the HP 32S II. Having me served well over nearly two decades, the 32S II is still a trusted companion of mine.

Basic functionality is now finished, but it still lacks key features like menus, programming and equitation solving :) . I think my old HP will remain on my desk for some more years.

If You want to give it a swirl (iPhone, iTouch or Safari 3.0 needed): www.kronenberg.org/rpn
for iPhone/iTouch users, You might like this shorter domain alias: www.kberg.ch/rpn :)

Link to Original HP Page. – enjoy! Mike

  1. Mike:

I, too am a big RPN fan. How can a non-technical dufuss, like me, get the RPN calculator to reside on my iTouch? CAn I download it and install it or is it more complicated than that?

  2. Unfortunately it can’t be downloaded at the moment, as it is a webapp.

But as apple has released the SDK now… I think I’ll code a proper iPhone/iPod app, that can be used with the new firmware in june.

  3. Absolutely outstanding. I hate arithemtic entry.

Now if you would only clone my cherished HP 11C before it dies :)

Looking forward to the downloadable version. I would not worry too much about programming and equation solving. I doubt one person in 20 would use those features.

  4. It’s almost June, still on track? This beats the heck out of RPN calculators on AppSafari.

  5. Hi Ted,

just this weekend I found some time to create a “native” version of the calc. Still some lines to write, but it’s much closer to the original.

  6. heja Mike,
I have already your webapp running and it looks great, but having a downloadable version would even be better.
    Waiting eagerly.

  8. Ditto, you have another potential customer. The RPN calculators currently in the Apps store look terrible.

  9. So…kinda’ new at this (just turned 60 – lol), what’s an appropriate donation, and will that cover the downloadable version (if and when).

  10. Way cool, Mike. I’d love that 11C as well.
Any way to have the buttons click instead of lighting up?
    (Probably not, huh.)

  11. Any ETA on when we can purchase via the apt store? I would like to buy ASAP. Upgrade later as needed. At some point, an option that allow it to work similar the itouch keypad by enlarging the key names to minimize key errors would be nice. Thanks

  12. Just some Information about my upcomming rpn calculator,

the “downloadable version” is getting more complete by the day. But I still have to wait on the OK from the AppStore.

The First version will be analog to the 32. I’ll probably include a new default skin to have it look more like an “iphone” app, but the current skin will be included for nostalgic reasons ;) .

Got to dig for my 11 to have a “horizontal” modal.

    @Doug Purvis
    About Donations

The webversion of the rpn calc is – as are all of my Open Source projects – free.

If it comes to donations to Open Source Software, I have the following approach:
    1. it’s free… so I’ll use it to see if it fits my bill ;)
    2. if I use it to create commercial content, I’ll donate a part of the gain I made with my commercial product
    3. if it’s a pet project of mine, i.e. I use it a lot, or I wan’t to see some progress, I donate, too.

    How much?
What is it worth to You? I’ve got 50 Cent donations from students and I know it was a big effort on their side… and I’ve got bigger donations from business men.

But we do talk about appreciation here. Donations normally don’t make up a part of the developing time of Open Source projects, so I for my part don’t do it for the donations.
And, I’m equally happy for other feed-backs like bug-reports, translations etc)

I, for my part, use the donations to keep my development infrastructure running
    - Webserver
    - Software licenses
    - New hardware
    - Apple Dev Fees (for example $99 Dollars to be able to test my apps on the iPhone during development)

As with the iPhone AppStore, I’m still not sure if I’ll put a $2-$3 price tag to the download, as all the traffic is going over Apples Servers, and I’ve got less possibilities to advertise my projects (…and donation page :) ).

  13. Mike – I cannot get the Trig functions to work. I hit “30″ then “sin”, and get “-0.9880″ (staat null comma funf).

    Was geht hier los?

    Danke,

  14. Mike,

My wife has just purchased an iPod Touch, and, when I was playing around with it, I was bitterly disappointed to see poor excuses for HP emulators on the apps store in assessing whether or not to get an iPod Touch myself. But I was pleasantly surprised to see the progress you have made. If you are able to get this up and running on the App Store, I would happily pay $10 for this. I think you are selling yourself short at the $2-$3 price tag. I am a professional scientist and encourage you to get this up as soon as possible, as I imagine there are many like me who will not bother with anything short of the genuine HP ‘experience’.

    cheers

  16. Mike:

I understand your feelings about FSF-style freedom, but I’d happily pay $10 for a downloadable app of this version, more for a horizontal one that looked more like the 11/15 C.

  24. This is an app that I would gladly pay for. My beloved 32sII is in it’s death throes and I can’t find anything to replace it. The 41c emulators are nice, but I just love the 32sII. Any updates on when we might be able to download this app?

    Comment by John Welch — March 4, 2009 @ 17:45

  25. Mike — It’s now March09, and it looks like it’s been a while since anyone asked you about your progress on your HP32 emulator for iPhoneOS. I’m an RF EE that needs complex math and grew up on my 41cv then my 32S in highschool, then upgraded to my 48s in college. The 32′s solver functionality would kick ass but would not be trivial to code.

Are you still in the lead on this, or has someone else done something similar?

I agree that $10-$20 would be an acceptable price point if I can get my 32 or my 48 on my iPhone. Heck, even $50 if I could road-test it and know that it works.

Thanks for the work so far!

  26. I googled this and was very excited. Hope you’re making progress. This is an app I would gladly pay for to download from the itunes store. I love my 32sII, but my iPhone goes EVERYWHERE with me.

  28. Your current app looks great, but I’d pay 30 to 40$ for 48G on my iphone.
I still use mine to this day and having a clone on my phone would …. I can’t quote put into words what that would mean to me. :-)

    Cheers

  29. A Hp 48 emulator for iPhone is going to be GREAT. That’s what I’m searching for years.
I know the license for this calculator is been give away from Hp since 2000. Thank you. Mike you rock. Put the work that the donation will come. Hp 48 in the iPhone… INCREDIBLE.

  30. I, too, would love to have an HP-48 (or HP-28) emulator on my iPod touch.

    PS – shouldn’t your spam protector ask the value of “4 3 +”? ;)

  31. Hi Mike

Any hope for the HP32S II Ipod calculator? – just the skin would make it enjoyable!
I still got mine – the best I ever had, would be awsome to put it on my Ipod :-)

  32. I really wish this would come out, I love my 32sII. for those that can’t wait, I can’t reccomend i41cx+ enough. They have a calc only app and one with a printer. The full version with the printer is totally worth it! I went through the entire 41cx manual and found it to be virtually perfect in its emulation. The developer is still very active, too

  35. This is great! I have used three HP 32S II+ rpn calcs for over 15 years. Once, it fell off the back of my motorcycle, got run over by a tractor-trailer, and still worked perfectly! I’ve used it in grad school and to pass my Fundamentals and PE exams. I used to have two: one at the office, the other at home. Then, I moved and lost them both! I bought my third one 7 years ago and use it daily. Now, I am considering dropping my cell phone account and buying an iPod Touch 3rd Gen to use as a mobile computer and a VoIP phone. If you have developed an app for the iPod Touch 3rd gen then that would cinch it for me and I would buy the iPod Touch immediately. So, am I in luck?
    Thanks,
    Dave
