WineBottler 1.2 is coming along

Keep me going
give me coffee! Smoke 1 Smoke 2 Smoke 3

WineBottler 1.2 is nearly finished, and I tought I share some screenshots of it 😀

There are still to many mails, so I've tried to further simplify WineBottler:
The Bottler itself has undergone some cosmetic changes and gained advanced features for the predefined and the custom bottles. I've added a lot of descriptions and explanations. There is a new installation mode, where you can copy multiple files to a custom app.

But the main change with the bottles is the customized X11.app I'm using now. It 'hides' X11. It provides a AppMenubar with a custom Menu "Applications", which carries entry for basic Wine tools. It allows to cmd-tab between apps. It sports a private "Working Copy" in ~/Library/Application Support/com.yourcompany.yourapp_[BOTTLEUNIQUEID]. For now, there is no "open with" and drag'n'drop support.

You see Faerie Solitaire, check it out http://subsoap.com/ if you are a Solitaire addict 😉 . If You feel like your app should be in the predefined section, or you need some help with creating a custom self-contained app, drop me a line.

I'm reinstalling 10.5 now, for some testing on Leopard. This release will only work on 10.5+.

WineBottler & Wine 1.1.44

Another update, this time for both, the WineBottler and my build of wine.

You might have noticed, that my builds of wine and winetricks where badly broken in some parts after the update to > 1.1.35. Loads of things changed recently in wine. Some might know it, wine ist winding down to another stable release (1.2) and we are close to codefreeze, so everybody is trying to get their code in before gate closes. There will possibly be another 1-2 releases, after it will be bugfixing, bugfixing and bugfixing.

The other thing is winetricks. To understand winetricks - the script I'm relying on to do some of the heavy lifting - one has to know, that it always tries to achieve compatibility with the latest build of wine. This will break compatibility with older builds of wine, sooner or later. And you can't preserve a copy of winetricks, as it always updates download locations and checksums, which sometimes change very fast. This makes it kind of hard to stay with an old build of wine. More on winetricks at winehq.

In this update, I optimized the Wine environment (all the needed libraries) and changed a lot of configuration issues like the openssl.cnf file. Then I revised the bottler scripts to better handle paths with spaces, as winetricks has still some issues with some paths. There where some updates to the predefined prefixes as well... some more will follow, as they are always loaded from the internet, they get updated automatically.

Now WineBottler 1.1.44 and Wine 1.1.44 should work together again :D.

Wine 1.1.42

Finally updated the Wine runtime to 1.1.42, which normally comes packed in my WineBottler dmg. Updates on WineBottler itself will take a little bit longer... updates will come, as always, as time permits.

Just update your current version of wine by selecting "Preferences..." from the Wine-Glass Icon in the Statusbar, or download it manually from

Beside of the Wine changes, I've updated nearly every lib that ships together with the Wine binaries. Here are a list of all the libs and the changes to the libs.

WineBottler 1.1.35

Sorry for not answering comments lately. Finally the swine left me... or whatever it was. At least it gave me some time to do dull testing on all kind of OS X flavors. One of the findings was, that my Wine builds lacked some libs on machines without XCode installed. So here we go with an improved version of winehq.org latest and greatest.

winebottler.kronenberg.org
Or You can update directly over WineButtler.app and Wine.app. (remember to update both, as they can't yet cross-update).

Find the changelog here.

Happy testing!

WineBottler 1.1.34 [updated]

This build brings loads of bug-fixes and some small improvements... aswell as the latest and greatest from winehq.org.

winebottler.kronenberg.org
Or You can update directly over WineButtler.app and Wine.app. (remember to update both, as they can't yet cross-update).

Noteworthy changes, that I would be happy, if people could test them out:

  • Print support is working again. Wine should automatically recognize your CUPS printers.
  • The predefined/custom apps should work on non-english systems. Tested on German and French systems.
  • Added a small dialog when you double-click a windows file. Maybe add some warnings here?
  • There is a "startwine" script inside the package (inside the MacOS folder), which can be used to run wine from the command-line. It will handle X11 and all the paths. Use it like this: "./startwine some.exe /arguments"
  • I'm still looking for a proxy to test proxy support :D.
  • You can open all files with native OS X apps out of Total Commander. All credits go to Dominik R. Txs!

Happy testing!
