ies4osx 2.5beta6_4 [updated 2]

November 22nd, 2007 by

First,
let me thank You for all the feedback, bugreports and suggestions! I really appreciate it.
ies4osx had a little more exposure than usual during the last days. It showed that loads of people moved on to Leopard, what led to some frustration, as darwine an thus ies4osx was not working as expected.

Now with Darwine 0.9.49 Darwine 0.9.49_2 and ies4osx 2.5beta6_4 I hope I can better serve that need. Sorry, still no PPC solution (if You are interested, You should bug this guy).

Please note, both are still in very early stages for Leopard… so please tell me if it works for you. The whole setup is NOT tested on Tiger as stated in the last post.

Two request that where made more than one time:

  • use the wrapper of ies4osx to install other Windows Applications as .app packages (gives me some headaches on how to define the desired executable after installation 😉 )
  • install interesting windows components similar to Dan Kegels winetricks.

enjoy
Mike

[Update]
As I feared, this Darwine-x86-0.9.49 is only working on Leopard atm. Users of Tiger should use Darwine-x86-0.9.48 for now.

[Update 2]
Here is a new .49 Darwine Build, that works for me on Tiger and Leopard:
Darwine-x86-0.9.49_2

  2. Hey Mike, great job. Working in 10.5.1 on a MacBook Pro.

  3. hi Marcel, hi Derek
…so it looks like the .49 build is only working for Leopard atm. I really got to install Tiger again.

    Txs for testing!

  4. Mike:
Email me the build script. I have xCode loaded here and the other requirements and I can attempt to build it on Tiger. I have built Darwine, but had difficulties with getting Freetype to work.

  5. Hi James,

    eMail, what’s that :)?
As I read Your Post, my Tiger machine is up and running, and the new build is already on the site.

But thank You very much for the offer… and I’ll post the script for sure. problem is only that I need to incorporate some patches, until Darwine CVS is up-to-date again.

  6. Mike:
Thank you. I know how frustrating it can be when your e-mail provider is ‘down’, that’s why I have two 🙂 One is very public and the other is very private. I’ll get the new build for Tiger.

  7. Mike:
The build works here on Tiger. I had to kill wineserver, but that was my fault. Still waiting on Leopard.

  8. Hi,

Thanks… darwine work this time in tiger. The clock and notepad works (I only test these). For the file manager still not readable… only garbage symbols. Install ie4osx work as expected but… when finish… no ie in the application user folder (where i start the instal ie4osx). Neither in the admin application folder. So I move Darwine and install ie4osx in admin, try it… still go to the message where it said that ie is in application folder… But.. no ie anywhere…

  9. Hi Marcel & James

Happy that Darwine works on Tiger!

Some programs only work with the correct fonts, rededit and file manager are two examples.

You can download and try my corefonts script (some posts before :))…

    For ies4osx:
There was a problem with spaces in path names, if memory serves me right… maybe try to start ies4osx from “Users” folder? ies4osx can be deleted after the (successful) installation anyway.

  10. Hi Mike!

I wrote you an email about an ies4linux update but I don’t know if you received it since your email server is down.

You can read about it here: http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/news/49

I included many improvements you did, but not everything (yet). Also, this version fixes many bugs we had before.

You did an amazing job with both ies4osx and your Darwine builds! Congratulations!
If you read this before my email arrives, email me so we can discuss a little more things.

  12. Hi,

Thanks… now the explorer have font’s I can read.. So if I undersand we have at each darwine update to reinstall the font to. Maybe for newbee like me just put a reminder like do not forget to.. and the link to the page of corefont.

No install of ie again this time… was working before so… I think it’s not in the path because I put darwine and ies4osx in the same application folder… like you can see no space or special caracter in the path.

  13. oups..

I do not know if it’s normal… but even when finish the install without result, the 2 cores are almost at 100% load in fact 97% after the install ie is finish without success. When starting an other install, the proc. load drop to 0,2% in download time and pass to 0,3% during the install process. When finish return to 97% of the 2 cores use.

Maybe I’m wrong but… it’s like it’s work in a loop to create the ie in the application folder. Maybe it’S why the install never show up in the application folder.

  14. Hi marcel,

Looks like you don’t have the rights to write to Your Applications folder. I put a option to install it elsewhere / with password on my list 🙂

For now, try to run ies4osx with an account with admin rights.

  15. Hi Mike,

The log I post was effectively from my user account. But, when I saw it not working,,,, I transfer darwine and ie4osx in my admin appli directory with the same result… work said success but noting in the appli folder (the admin this time).

  16. This is really interesting work, It’ll be brilliant for quick testing and checking layouts under OS X.

    – Could you configure the default window size to make way for the dock?

    – Will it be possible to make the fonts look as crappy as they do on windows?

  17. hello mike,
i have a little problem with starting the installed IE with a useraccount without admin permissions.
i installed it on my main account and then switched to the account i created for my girlfriend. with this account it is not possible to open the installed IE. i tested minesweeper from the darwine examples and it started up without any problems. i even changed the permissions for darwine and the IE to read&write for the second account…

the IE just pops up in the dock for a second and then nothing happens.

    any suggestions?

    many thx, daniel

Remove IE 6.0, then run ies4osx again.

  20. Mike,
I attempted to install in 10.5.1. Downloaded Darwine from your site, as well as ies4osx. Install says it is good (apps appear in the applications folder). When I try to run it, it fires up X11 the first time, but nothing else happens. If I quit X11 and try again, nothing happens (X11 does not start).

Here is the log from the ies4osx installer. I tried IE5 and IE6.

  21. Hi Barry,

it looks like You can’t write to /tmp…
    Possible causes:
    – disk full 🙂
    – /tmp or /private/tmp does not exist
    – you have no write access to /tmp or /private/tmp

are You on a admin account?

    Comment by mike — December 5, 2007 @ 09:19

  22. I have admin. I also have 128GB available on the drive. When I open terminal and cd /tmp, there is a directory there with items in it. When I cd /private/tmp, there is a directory there with items in it.

  23. So, any ideas? I have tried without a firewall or proxy also.

Could it be an issue with filevault?

    Comment by Barry — December 8, 2007 @ 00:24

  24. @Barry

I’ve never used it with filevault.
But if the console is working with filevault, ies4osx should, too.

  26. I’ve been using ies4osx at work in Tiger, and it survived the Leopard upgrade without fail.

I’ve just downloaded the latest release of both Darwine and ies4osx on a Leopard MBP and the interface is garbaged up to the point of being unusable. The menus, fields, buttons don’t show up (only the bitmaps on the buttons themselves).

I’m not sure if I updated X11 when I upgraded to Leopard, so here’s my X11 string:
    X11.app 2.0 – X.org X11R7.2

Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. ies4osx has become an integral part of my daily routine, so thank you so much for what you do!

  29. I am finding that flash content plays back very slowly in the IE6 I have installed on my mac recently. I tried shrinking the size of the window to see if that would help with the rendering of vector animation, however, it didn’t.

I also found that audio would not play through flash…

Have I possibly overlooked something to do with installing/updating the flash player when using ies4osx on a mac?

I installed Darwine and ies4osx without any problem.
But when I open a my website in IE6 via ies4osx, flash objects doesn’t appear and there are many javascript errors.
Although, when I open the same site in IE6 on a PC, there no problems…
Other issue is that my Mac (iMac 24″ 2.8 Leopard) seems to be a little slowly until I restart it… 🙁

  36. Hi Mike have installed ies4osx but only get the option to install Internet Explorer 6. Any idea why I don’t get the option to install IE5 or IE7? or how I could get hold of them?

    Kind regards,

    Rob

  37. Same overhere as Rob and Paul. I really got excited about the fact that IE6 AND IE7 were made for mac-usage. The installer unfortunately didn’t look like the pictures I saw on other mac-sites: no checkboxes for IE-versions were available.

    Downloaded versions:
    – ies4osx-3_0_1
    – Darwine-x86-1.1.18

Any idea how to get the number 7 working ?

    Keep up the good work,
    Erik
