WineBottler | How to Install Notepad++ on a Mac

WineBottlerUse WineBottler to run Notepad++ on OS X, without installing Windows.

Just got a tweet from @codylloydwright, why WineBottler is missing an automated install of Notepad++. How very right he is, I'm using Notepad++ a lot on Windows, so why not on OS X?

I added it to the automated installs and made it my next video tutorial. (Subscribe to the new MikesMassiveMess YouTube Channel to stay up to date on other howtos.)

Installing Notepad++ on a Mac

  1. Download WineBottler 1.6.x from http://winebottler.kronenberg.org
  2. Copy WineBottler and Wine.app to your Mac.
  3. Start WineBottler.
  4. Search for "notepad" in the "Download" Section, click "Notepad++"
  5. Give the App a name.
  6. Wait 🙂 .
  7. Done. Run Notepad++ from "On My Mac" or from wherever you have installed the App to.
  8. If Notepad++ finds some updates, just let it install them - select "Restart Notepad++" after the updates are installed. Wait for Notepad++ to apply the updates and relaunch itself.

Enjoy!
Mike

WineBottler | 1.4.1.5 & 1.6-rc2

WineBottlerWineBottler is going into another round - or two - with the release of 1.4.1.5 of the (still) stable tree and 1.6-rc2 of the (soon to be stable tree).

Beside the latest wine changes, they contain fixes – mainly for the nasty "sanitized.sh" bug, which would break your App, if the name contained spaces.

I still hear, that some users have problems with missing ntlm_auth. So please keep an eye on related error messages in the log, if a build should fail. In that case, please make sure, that you have no older WineBottler and Wine.app installed on your system. WineBottler is using Spotlight to look for Wine.app – this means it might select an old version. Just archive or delete the old versions. If the error persists, please send me a note.

WineBottler Dwonload Window

Wine is finally in codefreeze for 1.6. So, no new features – only bugfixes – until we have a new stable release.

For the release of WineBottler 1.6, I've planned some new features – as the new Mac Driver (that replaces X11) on the one hand opens new possibilities, but on the other hand forces me to rearrange features I had in place for Wine.app for a long time (like the status-bar menu).
At least, we have already achieved basic functionality with the development builds of WineBottler: You can use Wines latest and greatest – but without some of the WineBottler amenities.

Wine.app 1.6-rc2 is already working great for loads of Windows-based programs. But some still need extra libraries or treatment.
This is why I'm very interested in WineBottler Log-Files, at the moment. If WineBottler should fail to install your program – for whatever reason – please mail me the log. I'll have a look at it, and if time permits, I'll send you a hint.

Now head over to WineBottler and get the new builds.

Enjoy!

WineBottler | 1.5.31

WineBottlerWineBottler 1.5.31 contains the last development build of Wine.app, as the wine project is going into codefreeze to finally release another stable version. This is a very good development because the last stable version (Wine 1.4.1) is getting very dated.

With everything set up, I plan to continue to serve development builds of Wine alongside the new stable.

For WineBottler 1.5.31 we did some cleanup and bug-fixing. Especially programs, that need encryption perform better, as ntlm_auth (client mode) is working now.

As usually, you can download the new WineBottler over at winebottler.kronenberg.org.

Enjoy

WineBottler | 1.5.30, now with Codesigning support

WineBottlerOne of the features I needed lately was the ability to codesign my WineBottler apps. It is a requirement to pass OS X's Gatekeeper in default settings – not all users are able or/and comfortable with lowering their security settings, which is absolutely OK in these days.
All you have to do to codesign your Apps generated by WineBottler, is to enter your Apple Developer ID (you find your Developer ID in Keychain's "My Certificates" – look out for "Mac Developer: YOUR NAME (XXXXXXX)". Now enter "Mac Developer: YOUR NAME (XXXXXXX)" in the corresponding field of WineBottler's advanced tab, and it will digitally sign your app as a final step. Done.

Documentation & Tech Specs
I finally got around to write down a very short and preliminary Documentation for WineBottler: It explains all the advanced settings in short words. The Tech Specs contain some notes about how a WineBottler App-bundle is structured and how my builds of Wine.app are made, as well as all the included dependencies.

WineBottler - Advanced

As usually, you can download the new WineBottler over at winebottler.kronenberg.org.
